Marks and Symbols

Summary

Marks can be used as working language for designers, printers, and clients. marks she be used as a way to solve visual problems. graphic designers, anthropologist, and psychologist use many classification systems. Symbols should be useful for ideation, development, and analysis.

Symbol vs. Logo

A symbol is a mark without type used to identify a corporation, agency or institution. it can be legally protected. A logo is a word or words in type. identity company, brand, project, and group. This can also be legally protected. A combination mark is a symbol and logo used together, also called a signature. it is a constant space relationship.

3 things I learned

  1. A gestalt is an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. That is a very important vocabulary word because if you don't follow the "rules" that goes into marks, it can become un-useful. which will defeat the whole purpose of you making that product. When not correctly using symbols, pictographs, letter-marks, logos, combination marks, and trademarks, it can become confusing,
unreliable and redundant. Lastly I learned that symbols are very complex. They should only be one color, have close gestalt, easy to identify, and have the proper amount of negative space.

    Valuable information

My favorite thing I learned is quite simple, don't let your mark or symbol be to confusing to the point the reader has spent more time trying to figure that out rather than the actual main point. This will be very valuable in the future because the future is now. You'll always want to be one step ahead, you want to be doing things the right rather than the wrong.

    General thoughts

I find it very vital to know how complex symbols and marks can be. And how impactful they can be towards the audience or client. Symbols are  very complex, and should be made the correct and successful way.
